In today’s world, we’re all looking for a quick fix. While using acids and retinols can be a helpful tool, the overuse of them is not. This tends to be an issue with a lot of us nowadays, and misinformation and undereducation on these topics can be really harmful to the skin.
When we're overusing these products, we strip our barrier and that’s when more issues with our skin come to light. Acne, dry, flaky, red and irritated skin. Knowing your skin type is probably the most important thing, then knowing which products and ingredients balance your skin type is the second most important thing. In my experience in the industry almost all of my clients had no idea what their skin type was and then were using products that didn’t help the problem, and most cases made it worse.
Most people – especially oily/acneic skin types- are scared of oils. But oils are actually extremely nourishing and hydrating to the skin, when you’re using the correct one. This is what will help to repair the skin barrier, reduce inflammation in the skin, balance the oil production and lock in moisture. And then you wake up one day and you’re like wow.. my acne just disappeared using oils?
This is the incredible thing about using the correct products and having someone knowledgeable and reputable educate you. I would highly suggest listening to your medical professionals on all things skin related. Whether that be your dermatologist, or medical and professionally trained esthetician. This is extremely important and crucial for healthy skin. While influencers on TikTok can be great at sharing and selling you on their glass skin. You have to remember that your skin type is completely unique and most of the time completely different from theirs. What they are using, might not be right for you and what needs balance in your skin.
Oils like Jojoba, Sunflower, or Avocado can be great for oiler skin types as they will mimic the natural oil in your skin without causing any breakouts.
Apricot, Sweet almond are great for more sensitive and mature skin types and will help to nourish and hydrate the skin.
So while your favourite influencer might suggest slugging your face with Vaseline, it might just not be the right thing for you. Remember less is more, that goes for anything in life. And it always tends to be true and helpful.
